Many studies based on bioenergetics growth models have investigated the effects of environmental factors on oyster (Crassostrea gigas) growth and physiology. However, most of these models are site-specific and cannot be applied to other culture sites without the re-estimation of parameters or re-formulation of some processes. We aimed to develop a generic growth model suitable for application in contrasting environments, with a constant set of parameters. We tested the oyster-DEB model (Bourlès et al. 2009) for the stimulation of C. gigas growth in different cohorts (spats and adults) at major shellfish culture sites in France, in several years: Arcachon (1993–1994); Marennes-Oléron (2007); Quiberon (1999, 2000, 2001); Rade de Brest (2008); Baie du... |

An ecosystem-based approach to bivalve aquaculture management is a strategy for the integration of aquaculture within the wider ecosystem, including human aspects, in such a way that it promotes sustainable development, equity, and resilience of ecosystems. Given the linkage between social and ecological systems, marine regulators require an ecosystem-based decision framework that structures and integrates the relationships between these systems and facilitates communication of aquaculture-environment interactions and policy-related developments and decisions. The Drivers-Pressures-State Change-Impact-Response (DPSIR) management framework incorporates the connectivity between human and ecological issues and would permit available performance indicators to... |

This study deals with rearing methods, growth and mortality performances, and problems encountered by the oyster farmers from Quiberon Bay (2800 ha of leases) : it relies on a survey achieved in july 2001, about 18 oyster farmers, and 2 diving campaigns (july and october 2001) on 2 years old oyster batches from the same farmers. The analysed enterprises vary in particular by the location and depth of their concession inside the bay, but also by their rearing scheme : a majority favours seedings with 18 month old oysters or more, according to prices and availability of oysters supplies. The duration until marketable size and mean mortalities seem to have increased since a preceding inquiry in 1986. The main constraint, affecting priorly the south border... |

Monitoring of Crassostrea gigas performances, from two year-classes, during 12 years, in various French shellfish farming areas have revealed great inter-annual and inter-sites differences in reproduction, growth, mortality or quality of oysters (meat content, Polydora infestation...). The presentation attempts to highlight how a comparative analysis of existing temporal or spatial data on molluscs, water quality, geography or meteorogoly may help to better understand and manage shellfish ecosystems. The range of hydrobiological conditions (food availability, turbidity, temperature...) recorded at national, pluriannual scale, in relation to shellfish performances, enlarges the base of such relationship. However, undirect causative factors, either natural... |

(subtidal on-bottom rearings), has been the year of the gestation for the RISCO-QB project (Risks in shellfish farming, in baie de Quiberon). Discussions with various potential partners have resulted in the project drafting with 3 main objectives : - estimation of the trophic capacity of the bay and adjustment of the rearing biomass, - impact of sediment nearness upon on-bottom technique and adjustment of the rearing practices, - appraisal of the impact of these 2 factors (trophic capacity and sediment nearness) on the budget of the farming companies and their consequences in the management of the mortality risk. Concurrently with the project writing, pre-studies, mainly methodological, have been conducted in the bay since 2007 in order to investigate the... |

The main objectives of the Mollusc Pathology Network (REPAMO) are to prevent introductions or outbreaks of infectious agents, prevent spread within a farm and especially from one farm to another, to study ways of decreasing the impact of infectious agent and to monitor the development of these pathogens in order to guarantee the health status of oysters exchanged with our commercial partners. On the whole, REPAMO's activities have not changed and include: - monitoring the development of diseases that have to be reported to authorities and carrying out analyses to classify zones: bonamiosis and marteiliosis; - baseline monitoring of farmed and wild populations of bivalve molluscs; - studying cases of abnormal mortality events; - controlling mollusc... |

Intentional transfers of numerous bivalve species have had a long tradition and are commonly conducted along the European Atlantic coast. However numerous studies have concluded that intentional transfer of species for aquaculture purposes is one of the most principal vectors for the introduction of exotic species around the world. Threats due to the transfer and introduction of species have been identified and a range of global and regional agreements, guidelines, standards and statutes to minimize effects have been established. Yet whether such regulations can protect and conserve the marine environment and address economic considerations remains unanswered. This study provides the first overview of bivalve transfer activities for aquaculture purposes... |

For centuries human populations have moved live shellfish around the world for consumption or aquaculture purposes; being relayed from their area of origin for growout or sale. This is in contrast to the inadvertent anthropogenic spreading of species via e.g. ballast waters. There are inherent risks associated with transfer of shellfish including introducing of alien species, diseases, pests, bacteria and viruses associated with the translocated species in addition to the potential impact on genetic integrity and biodiversity of local stocks. Many examples of severe ecological impacts have been documented worldwide owing to the intentional or unintentional translocation of animals. It is therefore important to develop risk reduction methods which have not... |

The wide range of data from the French Ifremer/REMORA network, collected since 1993 allow a global characterization of mortalities of 1-year old and 2-years old cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas, that are cultivated in the main French oyster areas (Fleury et al, 2003), and thus a better understanding of the causes of these mortalities (Ifremer /MOREST project). The average annual mortalities on intertidal sites range from 10 to 20%. Most of the mortalities take place in Spring and Summer. 1-year oyster mortalities occur in Marennes and several sites in Brittany whilst 2-years oyster mortalities occur in the same sites and in baie des Veys (Normandy). In addition, 2-years oyster mortalities appear more variable according to different annual surveys.... |

Mussel samples have been placed in plastic-mesh bags hung on wood poles (« bouchots »), at 4 locations of a mussel culture area in the bay of Vilaine (South Brittany, France). They have been monitored for one year, from February 2000 to February 2001. The recorded growth have been rather fast (plus 1.2 g per month between April and September), and mortalities moderate (between 15% to 25%), with better results in southern stations, further from the estuary. Among the physico-chemical parameters recorded, the most striking were very low salinities (below 10 g/l) recorded for days, after heavy rains. They provoqued a valve closure of mussels (recorded by a « valvometer »). Some physiological indicators being tested (muscle force and hermeticity) seemed to... |

Summer mortalities of young oysters have been studied in 1999 through the monitoring of a unique oyster batch distributed among 3 sites located from upstream of an estuary (Fort-Espagnol, Auray river) to downstream (Kerpenhir, Auray river) up to open bay (Men er Roué, Bay of Quiberon). Mortality and growth have been monitered in parallel with vitality indices, so as to try or identify periods of weakness of oysters. The spat grew from a mean weight of 3 g, in the beginning of May to around 35 g in November, without sharp differences between sites. The summer mortalities remained moderate (10 %) in the 2 most marine stations, whereas a light peak of mortality (15 %) was recorded in July in the most continental station. Any of the physico-chemical parameters... |

To provide updated information on the growth of Crassostrea gigas in Brittany, experimental stations on 8 sites (culture area) were monitored. Biometric measurements (length, width,...), meat composition (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates...), quality, survival and parasitism were observed after 7 months. A descriptive study by principal components analysis was conducted to find the most significative variables explaining the variability and classifying the sites. Six groups of station can be identified by their respective performances that have been screened in detail. An optimal strategy was discussed to establish a most efficient data network in Brittany. The yearly variations will be checked up and their correlations with environmental factors tested... |

After the decision taken by the French - South African committee to reduce the budget and the duration of all the selected proposaIs of the first call, Rhodes University and Ifremer decided to revise their joint proposaI and organized a meeting in South Africa in february 1998. A multidisciplinary team composed of economists and specialists in different fields of aquaculture spent on week in South Africa (9 and 15 february 1998) with Prof Hecht and his team in Rhodes University, in order to precise the proposaI and define detailed actions to be carried out within the next two years. The present report summarises the principal conclusions of the survey in term of general approach, detailed methodologies and planning for 1998. |

Marine diseases have major impacts on ecosystems and economic consequences for aquaculture and fisheries. Understanding origin, spread and risk factors of disease is crucial for management, but data in the ocean are limited compared to the terrestrial environment. Here we investigated how the marine environment drives the spread of viral disease outbreak affecting The Pacific oyster worldwide by using a spatial epidemiology framework. We collected environmental and oyster health data at 46 sites spread over an area of 300 km2 along an inshore-offshore gradient during an epizootic event and conducted risk analysis. We found that disease broke out in the intertidal farming area and spread seaward. Mortalities and virus detection were observed in oysters... |
